Elavil potentiates directly acting sympathomimetic amines (in cold/asthma remedies) and inhibits the actions of indirect sympathomimetics (ephedrine, tyramine). Elavil is to be given cautiously along with antihypertensives like guanethidine and clonidine as it prevents its transport to adrenergic neurons. Elavil potentiates central nervous system depressants like alcohol and antihistaminics. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI’s) and Elavil when given together can cause dangerous toxicity. Elavil is recommended in lower doses in adolescent and elderly patients.

What are the common dosages of Generic Elavil?
The recommended starting dosage of Amitriptyline is 75 mg/day in divided doses. In severely depressed patients a maximum of 150mg/day can be given in divided doses. The increase in doses are preferably made in late afternoon or bed time doses as it cause a sedative effect before anti depressant action. 10 mg, 3 times a day, and 20mg at bed time is satisfactory in adolescent and elderly patients as they cannot tolerate higher doses. Elavil is not recommended for children under 12 years of age.
