Cyclosporine is a cyclic polypeptide with 11 amino acids obtained from a fungus. Cyclosporine specifically inhibits proliferation of T- lymphocyte cells, production of interleukin and cytokines. The mature cytotoxic lymphocytes (killer cells) lyse antigen-containing cells. Restasis selectively suppresses cell-mediated immunity and prevents graft rejection. Cyclosporine suppresses the responses of primed helper T-cells also and hence used in the treatment of autoimmune diseases. Restasis does not affect the bone marrow and reticuloendothelial system. Cyclosporine inhibits cell mediated immunity system. The stimulation of T-cells produces a cascade of calcium dependent events and protein kinase activation. Guidelines before using Cyclosporine
The bottle containing Cyclosporine should be inverted before use to form an opaque, uniform white emulsion. Cyclosporine can be used along with artificial tears. The artificial tears should be administered 15 min after Restasis administration. The patient should be advised not to use contact lenses while administering Cyclosporine ophthalmic drops. The contact lens can be worn 15 minutes after Restasis is administered. It is not advisable to use the Cyclosporine during pregnancy and lactation. If it is an absolute must to use Restasis during pregnancy and lactation, it should be administered under the supervision of a medical practitioner. Restasis is not administered in pediatric patients below the age of 16.
