Sumatriptan is an agonist for 5-HT1D/B. The co-administration of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors/Serotonin Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors can cause serious Serotonin Syndrome. The use of ergot-type medications and Sumatriptan within 24 hours of each other should be avoided as it can cause vasospastic reactions. Sumig can cause chest discomfort and jaw or neck tightness. The prolonged use of Sumig can cause toxicity in melanin rich tissues. Sumatriptan should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Sumatriptan gets excreted in to breast milk. Avoiding breastfeeding for 12 hours after treatment with Sumatriptan can minimize infant exposure to Sumatriptan. Sumatriptan should not be given to pediatric patients. The use of Sumig is contraindicated in patients with uncontrolled hypertension, ischemic cardiac, cerebrovascular, or peripheral vascular syndromes. Sumig should not be administered to patients with hemiplegic or basilar migraine.
